Curtea de Argeș - tourist attractions

Curtea de Argeș offers visitors a variety of activities and experiences that highlight both its rich past and the daily life of the locals.
  1. The Archiepiscopal Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș – Located at the entrance of the Curtea de Argeș Monastery complex, the cathedral is dedicated to Saint Philothea and serves as the Royal Necropolis for King Michael I and Queen Anne.
  2. The Princely Church of Saint Nicholas – Built in the 14th century, this is one of the oldest churches in Wallachia, featuring impressive frescoes and unique paintings in Romania.
  3. Manole’s Fountain – Legend has it that Master Manole sacrificed himself here. Voivode Neagoe Basarab, impressed by the beauty of the monastery, locked Manole on the monastery roof, fearing that he might one day build another place as magnificent as Curtea de Argeș Monastery.
In an attempt to escape, Manole crafted wings from wooden shingles and managed to take flight, but he tragically fell at the spot where Manole’s Fountain stands today.
  4. The Ruins of San Nicoară – A medieval site offering a breathtaking view over the city.

Curtea de Argeș - local activities

1. Tasting Local Products – Inside the town markets, you will find small local producers offering cheeses, honey, and traditional meat products. Personal recommendations include cow’s milk "telemea", "brânza de burduf" (a type of fermented cheese), and trout from the local fish farms.
2. Stroll Through Central Park – A peaceful spot near the monastery, home to Manole’s Fountain. We also recommend a walk along the main boulevard or Teilor Boulevard, which stretches 1.6 km from Curtea de Argeș Monastery to the Princely Church.
3. The Old Town – Still preserves its interwar architecture, with charming balconies and elegant windows.
4. Traditional Restaurants – You can try local dishes such as beef soup, shepherd’s "bulz" (polenta with cheese and smoked meat), or "papanași" (fried doughnuts) with blueberry or blackberry jam.
